The hair growth cycle
To understand how laser hair removal works, it helps to know a bit about the hair growth cycle, which consists of three stages:
- Anagen (active growth): During this phase, a hair is actively growing from the follicle. This is by far the longest phase, lasting up to two to seven years at a time with 80 to 90 percent of your hair in this stage at once.
- Catagen (transitional stage): This short period only lasts about two to three weeks. During this time, the hair detaches from the blood supply and stops growing.
- Telogen (resting stage): The resting hair remains in its root during this stage, which lasts about three months, while a new hair begins to grow underneath it. Eventually, the old hair falls out and the process repeats.
How laser hair removal works
Laser hair removal works by targeting hairs in the anagen, or active growth, phase. A targeted beam of light energy is placed in the treatment area, where the melanin pigment in the hair absorbs the energy and turns it into heat. When this happens, the hair follicle containing the hair becomes damaged and future growth of the hair is inhibited.
Because of the way laser hair removal works, people with the most contrast between their skin and hair color achieve the best results; in particular, blonde, gray, and red hair are not receptive to the laser energy because they lack the pigment necessary to absorb the laser energy, and it is important to avoid tanning before treatments. In addition, several treatment sessions are needed to achieve optimal results because only hairs in the anagen phase respond to the treatment. With six to eight sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart, all of your hair will have had time to move through the anagen phase and therefore provide the largest volume of hair removal. Because hormonal changes, medical conditions, and simply getting older can all cause hair to regrow, you will need to come back in for maintenance treatments over time. In addition, it is important to understand laser hair removal can never remove 100% of the hairs in a given area, but it greatly reduces the volume of hair.
